Personal Training - In Person versus Apps

As technology keeps improving we are seeing multiple new ways of training. Some of these include new apps to be able to workout when you want and get instruction on your phone. So what are the pros and cons to this in comparison to personal training?

Personal Training Apps Pros

1 - it can get you moving and that is the most important thing. Adding in activity in any form is going to be beneficial and if the app makes you more active that is a win.

2 - If you are someone proficient and knowledgeable in movement it can be a cheaper alternative than in person sessions. You will receive workouts and not have to make them yourself. In person sessions require a schedule to be set in advance, something could come up, you could not feel good, etc and then the appointment is canceled. The apps allow for more flexibility in time.

3 - Location doesn't matter! Whether you work from home, or you have a gym at the office, or even if you take a vacation, your workouts will follow you wherever you go. If you are traveling you can’t meet with your trainer, the apps are an easy way to get workouts to do on your own when you are away.

Personal Training Apps Cons/Personal Training In Person Pros:

1 - Lack of feedback. One of the biggest cons of the apps is you won’t be receiving immediate coaching feedback on movements that you're doing. Personal trainers are professionals that are there to give you real time corrections as you are doing the movements. This can save you from doing multiple reps of poor movement and prevent injury.

2 - In person training allows for socialization which we all need. It can be intimidating to meet someone you don’t know especially when you don’t like the position you are starting from. The job of the personal trainer is to help you get where you want to be. Among making a friend you have someone you can directly ask questions to when they come up.

3 - Apps are good to give you a workout regime but don't include the equipment and space.

BONUS - It is also a lot easier to delete an app on your own than to cancel an appointment face to face with someone else so it may be easier to quit. Accountability and having an actual person to connect with increases the likelihood of you showing up.

There is not a right answer to which is better and which is worse. That's why it's called PERSONAL TRAINING. There's nuance to your situation and every person is somewhere a little different. And that's exactly why when we meet with prospective clients for free before starting with a workout. We have recommended people reach out to other gyms or other coaches in the area. We've told people that they don't need a trainer or coach at all. And if you're a busy, driven adult and you're in the right place to make a change, the personal trainers at Pittsburgh FIT want to work with you.

The most important thing is to use whatever you need to so you can reach your goals and stay healthy.
