This is the first blog post from a newer member of the Pittsburgh FIT community. We’ll call her “Sally” (not her real name).
Sally has has been at Pittsburgh FIT for a little while, but when I asked for their story, she didn’t want to share at first. Details have been changed to keep her anonymous, but we thought there are more than a few people that haven't started yet that could benefit from knowing what it actually feels like when you walk through the doors.
And today, she’s allowing me to tell the story through her eyes.
The Start of Something New
Hi, I’m Sally. I’m a fairly new member of Pittsburgh FIT, and I’m excited to share my story with you over the next few blog posts. It’s been a journey, and while I’m just getting started, I’ve already learned so much, not only about fitness but also about myself. I’m married to Jim, whose story you may have read here, and when I first joined Pittsburgh FIT, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect.
I’ll be honest—I wasn’t sure if I was going to stick with it. You see, I’ve tried just about everything when it comes to getting fit. I’ve tried crash diets, home workout programs, and enough fitness equipment to outfit a gym. My basement is full of unused treadmills, ab machines, and striders—all collecting dust. I’d start these things, and they’d work for a little while, but then life would get busy, or I’d lose motivation. And then I’d feel guilty for not following through, so I’d try something else. Sound familiar?
I’ve always been a busy professional—work takes up a lot of my time, and I often find myself putting my health last. I’d convince myself that I’d get back to it later, but "later" always seemed to come with more excuses. It wasn’t until I saw a friend at work who seemed to be thriving that I thought, maybe this time would be different. She was looking great, had so much energy, and her clothes fit better than before. I asked her how she was doing it, and she told me about Pittsburgh FIT.
At first, I didn’t think I’d fit in. I imagined the gym would be full of people who were in amazing shape, doing intense workouts I couldn’t even dream of doing. But my friend insisted I give it a try. So, despite my doubts, I decided to check it out.
The first thing I did was meet with a coach to talk about personal training. I wasn’t sure if it was right for me, but I figured it couldn’t hurt to try. From the very beginning, I was impressed. The coach didn’t push me too hard or make me feel embarrassed by my current fitness level. Instead, they focused on my goals and listened to my concerns. After talking it over, I decided to do personal training with Corey and nutrition coaching with Heather to get started.
And wow—what a difference it made! Corey, my personal trainer, worked with me at a pace that felt right for me, pushing me to do things I didn’t think I could do, but never making me feel like I had to keep up with anyone else. The workouts weren’t about being the best or lifting the heaviest weights, it was about what I could do and getting a little stronger each time. It felt empowering, and for the first time, I looked forward to my sessions.
On top of the personal training, I started working with Heather on my nutrition. I had tried so many diets in the past, but they were either too restrictive or didn’t fit with my busy schedule. Heather helped me find a way to make healthy eating work for me without giving up the foods I enjoy. We focused on small, sustainable changes—like adding more protein and fiber to my meals and being more mindful of my eating habits. It wasn’t about “perfect” eating; it was about building healthy habits I could actually maintain.
After just a few weeks, I started to feel the changes. I had more energy, my clothes started fitting better, and I felt less bloated. I was also getting stronger. I could see my body changing in ways I hadn’t seen before, and that was really motivating. It wasn’t just about the number on the scale—it was about how I felt in my body and how much stronger I was becoming.
This is just the beginning of my story, and I’m excited to share more with you in the coming weeks. I’ve learned that small changes really do add up, and the progress may not always be immediate, but it’s always worth it. In the next blog post, I’ll share more about what I’ve learned along the way, including how working with my trainer and nutrition coach has made a difference.
If you’re like I was, skeptical and unsure, know that you’re not alone. Pittsburgh FIT isn’t about being perfect or pushing yourself past your limits—it’s about showing up, working at your own pace, and making those small changes that lead to real progress. I’m excited to keep going, and I hope my journey encourages you to take that first step too.
Stay tuned for the next post where I’ll share my experience with the InBody and how it’s changed the way I view progress.
