Doug Root’s journey with Pittsburgh FIT is nothing short of inspiring. While he recently retired from an impressive 45-year career in journalism and civic leadership, it’s his transformation in fitness that’s truly taking center stage these days.
Doug joined us in 2020 with clear goals: improve his overall fitness, regain his running performance, and shed some weight. He didn’t just dip his toes into the process—he dove in headfirst. From the start, Doug paired Personal Training sessions with expert 1-on-1 nutrition guidance. Together, they focused on building strength, improving endurance, and refining his diet to maximize energy and recovery.
The results speak for themselves. Doug not only rediscovered his running rhythm—he literally runs from home to the gym, completes his workouts, and runs back—but also built strength and muscle that make him a standout in the gym. His dedication to consistent protein intake, balanced meals, and twice-weekly strength sessions has sculpted him into the best version of himself.
His workouts follow a traditional upper-and-lower body split, with an emphasis on core and locomotive strength. And while his biceps and delts may now rival those of a Greek statue at 69 years old, it’s Doug’s unrelenting energy and positive attitude that make him such a cornerstone of our community. He always shows up ready to work hard, share a laugh, and cheer on everyone around him.
Doug’s goals don’t stop here. He’s on a mission to run faster, stay pain-free, and continue building muscle and strength. He’s also training to beat his nephew in an obstacle course race—a challenge he takes on with his trademark mix of grit and good humor.
For Doug, fitness isn’t just about what happens in the gym—it’s about creating a life full of movement, health, and joy. He spends his days reimagining life in retirement with his husband, Luke, and their growing family of rescue cats. Doug’s advice for others? “Start where you are and build from there. Small, consistent steps lead to big results. And with a community like Pittsburgh Fit, you’ll never feel like you’re doing it alone.”
