Holiday eating can totally get out of control. And that's TOTALLY fine! You're supposed to take breaks from your regularly scheduled programming and enjoy yourself.
The most important thing is that you SHOULD NOT FEEL GUILTY about changing things up. Put the pressures aside and take a deep breath. You got this.
That being said, if you want to have your cake and eat it too, here are a few tips to keep things under control
1 - Schedule your holiday time
Put the parties, events, or even untracked meals on the calendar. Those are the days of decadence built into your schedule. Eating all the leftovers is not your job, and it's okay to give things away to clear it from your mind. Once the calendar event is over, it's back to normal!
2 - Hydrate
Still water, or sparkling. Have a glass of water first thing in the morning, another 10-20 minutes BEFORE meals, and an extra between all non water drinks
3 - Start with non starchy veggies (fiber first)
Fiber first is a rule to live by as fiber first supports even blood sugar levels which is the key to almost everything.
4 - Put your fork down between bites or chew each bite 30-50 times
This helps you not only enjoy your meal for longer, but it crucially supports your digestion and gives your body time to register fullness.
5 - Choose in advance
Decide how many alcoholic drinks you would feel good having AND how much dessert you would feel good having. Get specific. Utilize moderation. My number is 2 for desserts and 0 for alcohol. What’s yours?
6 - Use your support network for accountability
This can be a parent, sibling, friend, or even a therapist. Holidays can be both beautiful and tough. You get to have support for all your experiences in life and someone you can rely on to be in your corner. An objective 3rd party who can offer you unconditional positive regard is the key to weeding through mucky situations, examining your belief patterns, and upgrading for new ones that actually serve YOU.
We know you've got this! Happy Thanksgiving!
