I want to talk about a PR that happened outside of the gym and it’s a big one! As some of you may already know, on Friday evenings in the back of the gym there have been a special group of athletes doing some powerlifting. In this group are athletes from Special Olympics, and they have been working really hard since the end of August. While they have been putting up big PRs in gym, I want to highlight a HUGE PR that happened early at the start of our program. One of my athletes, Kam, loves working out and has had big goals since day one! (He wants to deadlift over 605lbs! That’s the world record in his weight class). The third week of our program Kam had to miss a session because he did not have a ride to the gym. Usually his parents or his sister would give him a ride but they were unable to that day.On Monday during the day Kam showed up at the gym with his mother. They had taken the bus together so Kam could learn how to ride the bus from Oakland to Pittsburgh Fit on his own. This was the second time they had made the trip by bus and Kam said he would see me at practice later that week. Friday came and Kam walked through the front door of Pittsburgh Fit after riding the bus all by himself! He hasn’t missed another practice and keeps getting stronger both in and outside the gym every day! When Kam walked through the door that day he reminded me not to give up when there’s an obstacle in your way. Be brave and do what you can to get passed it.
