Burnout

We hear people talking about being “burnt out” in a lot lately, and while you may hear people say, “ah, suck it up and just gut it out,” that’s not what you should do. No matter whether it’s life, work or even the gym that has you feeling exhausted, there are things you can do to help get out of the hole.

1 - Let yourself off the hook.We can be our own harshest critic. Instead, try being your own biggest supporter. If you’re feeling tired from something, give yourself permission to take the day off and rest, catch up on busywork or do something fun that you wouldn’t normally do on the day you choose. It’s noon on a Thursday? Go to an amusement park and enjoy the short lines, or hit up a matinee and watch some dinosaurs wreck shop. Maybe just sleep till noon? Whatever you choose, use it to help improve your overall mental and physical health. If you’re supposed to be at work, though, make sure you let them know you’re taking the day :)

2 - Take a walk.Just getting outside in nature can be incredibly rejuvenating. We are lucky to have an amazing park right in the middle of our city, and it’s free for everyone. Take some snacks, throw on some sunblock and enjoy your time outside. If it gets too hot, the Frick museum is right there too!

3 - Meditate.A meditation practice has been shown to alleviate stress just about as good as anything out there. If you’re a veteran meditator who has gotten away from their practice, set up 10min a day to clear your head. If you’ve not tried it before, there are a ton of apps that are great at helping you figure it all out. Two of my favorites are the Headspace and Calm apps. One of the great things about meditating is that it teaches you to understand, process and accept your thoughts, your surroundings and what’s going on in your life.
