Here are three tips to help you feel good about holiday and social meals. 1) Focus on adding in. By focusing on the nutrient rich foods that serve our body we naturally have a more abundant mindset and approach, thus helping reduce or eliminate feelings of restriction, deprivation and social eating isolation (this is the feeling we can get from feeling the need to eat “healthy food” while everyone else has other options etc.)2) Moderation. We’ve all heard it, moderation rules. This really is an oldie but a goody. It can be easy to write off familiar or seemingly simple tools and strategies. I encourage you to honestly reflect on where your skill level rests with moderation. When do you practice moderation? With which foods? Is it easy or challenging? Can you use moderation in different environments? Why is moderation useful for you personally? 3) Slow down. Give your body time to enjoy your meal and register fullness. Most of us eat food because we like it, not just because it’s necessary for survival, right? So this holiday season give yourself permission to enjoy your food. Chew and swallow each bite before having the next. (This not only gives you more time to enjoy each bite, but it also aids in digestion because your mouth is doing more work before passing it onto your stomach!) Set your utensil down between bites. Take note of your breathing and the pace that you’re eating. Most of all, allow yourself to savor each delicious morsel. You deserve it.
